At first glance, badminton and pickleball courts may look similar, but they have key differences that affect gameplay. Both courts are similar in size, but the court markings, net height, and gameplay rules make them distinct from one another.
One major difference is the net height. A pickleball net is lower than a badminton net, with the center of the net measuring 34 inches compared to badminton’s 5 feet. This means pickleball is played closer to the ground, making volleys and groundstrokes a crucial part of the game.
Another key distinction is the court markings. In pickleball, the court features a "non-volley zone" (the kitchen) near the net, which prevents players from smashing the ball too close to the net. This adds a strategic element to the game, as players must carefully place their shots rather than relying on aggressive smashes like in badminton.
In Singapore, many badminton courts are being repurposed for pickleball, making it easier for new players to find a place to play. As the demand for dedicated pickleball courts continues to grow, more facilities are accommodating the sport, helping it expand rapidly across the country.
