Footwork First: Why Your Feet Are Causing Your Long Shots

Most players blame their hands when a shot sails long. Very often, the real story starts two seconds earlier, with the feet.

The backward lean problem

When you're stretched out, off balance, or hitting on the run, your body instinctively leans backward to compensate for the awkward position. That backward lean tilts your paddle face open — automatically, regardless of how clean your technique looks in a relaxed drill. You can have textbook mechanics and still hit long if your feet put you in the wrong position to execute them.

Positioning matters more than you think

The next time you drift a shot long, pause and think back to the two seconds before contact rather than the swing itself. Nine times out of ten, the shot wasn't the actual problem — the court position that forced a rushed, off-balance swing was. Good positioning gives you the time to set your feet properly before you ever need to think about your paddle face.

Resets are where this bites hardest

Defensive resets are the toughest test of footwork under pressure. When you're scrambling to control pace off a hard incoming drive, the temptation is to jab at the ball with locked arms and a stiff paddle face — a combination that reliably sails long. Learning to reset well actually means slowing your hands down under pressure, which feels counter-intuitive until you feel it work in a real point.

The one-step fix

Getting your feet moving early — even a single small shuffle step — gives your paddle face time to set before contact instead of scrambling to catch up. This tiny adjustment is one of the highest-value habits you can build, because it fixes the root cause rather than patching the symptom.

Pickleball Corner Singapore runs footwork-focused drills at several of our community sessions specifically because this is where so many "technique" problems actually originate. If your shots keep going long despite feeling like your swing is fine, come work on positioning with us before you touch anything else.
